Environment:
Deep in the industrial district of Bandar Sri Damansara, KL, a corner lot factory unit is beaming with squiggly coffee aroma comical lines, flowing out when the doors are opened.
Ample space in this factory unit. |
Introducing BEAM Specialty, a cafe - cum - coffee bean roaster. Opening a cafe in a factory unit has the advantage of ample space and high ceiling, and cram will never be used to describe this spacious cafe. Only a handful of cafes in Kuala Lumpur choose to operate in this unique environment, besides BEAM, such as Garage 51 in Bandar Sunway and No.11 Espressolab in Sunway Damansara. Searching for parking around this area might be troublesome, but the coffee here is worth the hassle. :)
Steel beams provides extra sits. |
Smart space management will tell you to fully utilize the high ceiling by adding an extra floor to increase sitting capacity. Being a factory themed cafe, what better than to build this extra floor with steel beams and stairways. :)
Second floor. |
What BEAM stands for you ask? It's Bean Expedition at Manufactory. With a name like that, you will know that the people behind BEAM is no novice in coffee. On display are more than 10 types of single origin beans in jars with description explaining the source of the beans and their distinct taste. These beans are fresh, waiting to be handpicked by patrons and afterwards roasted to perfection.
Coffee roasters with variety of fresh single origin beans. |
On top of these beans and roaster (top floor), there are a few more smaller scaled roasters on display, and for sale. Get these if you want to try roasting your own beans at the comfort of your own home.
The apparatus corner. |
Besides roasters, check out the apparatus corner where many other coffee making equipment are displayed for interested buyers.

Food & Beverage:
A cafe this size can afford a kitchen serving proper cooked food. Currently serving are paninis and salads. Do expect menu expansion in the coming months.
Roasted Chicken Panini (right top) and Beef Bacon Panini (right). |
To the main subject, coffee - BEAM serves all the espresso based coffee (powered by La Spaziale coffee machine), and for coffee connoisseurs there are hand brew coffee with a wide range of specialty beans to choose from. One point that stands out from other cafes, BEAM serves Malaysian beverages too, kopi and teh, besides the western coffees.
I usually prefer my coffee hot, but BEAM serves good iced coffee too. Try their Signature Ice Coffee and The Bee - iced coffee with added honey.
The Bee Coffee (left), Signature Mocha (middle), and BEAM Signature Ice Coffee (right). |
Besides beverages, there are Malaysian delights or kuih-muih for you to savor too, such as kalipok (curry puffs), ma lai kou (Malay sponge cake) and pulut tekan (Nyonya pressed glutinous rice cake). Well done in kicking start the localization of the western cafe scene, proud to be a Malaysian western cafe. :)
When Tea Meets Coffee. |
Lastly, cakes and pastries are available too. Try the best seller, When Tea Meets Coffee - green tea flavored sponge cake complimented with coffee cream at the side.
Verdict:
A cool place to hangout while being able to witness the roasting and brewing process of your favorite beverage - coffee. A range of local delights brings the Malaysian touch into the western cafe scene.
