Environment:

Whisk Outpost is located in 1 Utama's Old Wing - Ground Floor, right beside Starbucks (what the...) and in front of Candylicious. To open a café right next door to coffee titan Starbucks, your brain is either overdosed with caffeine, or you are very confident that your coffee is 'hippy' enough to attract caffei-niacs.

Either way, the people behind Whisk (first branch in Empire Shopping Gallery) is brave enough to take on this challenge and I believe Bandar Utama's coffee partisans are glad that they did. FYI Whisk was shortlisted in the Best for Coffee category of the Time Out KL Food Awards 2011 and 2012.

Rustic furniture and tiles.

From the outside, Whisk looks like an antique store which sells vintage furniture and toys; inside, a rustic-y settings with village Kopitiam-looking tiles and small wooden tables and stools. An interesting combination between the 'kampung-styled' atmosphere and Western coffee and cakes.

The small wooden tables and stools helps to squeeze in higher customers' capacity in this small-sized café, not till its too cramp, just nice to have the 'bring-people-together' or 'muhibbah' feeling among patrons, something we might need in this multi-racial city.

Brewing equipment. Seasoned Starbucks baristas would be familiar with La Marzocco, Starbucks' original espresso machine brand for many years.

Right in the middle of this small café is a pillar which houses sugar and self-service water dispenser. In my opinion it is a cool concept to place this easily-noticable water dispenser that is conveniently located in the middle of the café, a thing other cafés are lacking (plain water is only available on request, some charge for it!).

Food & Beverage:
Whisk serves coffee, cakes & pastries, and desserts (macarons). There are many variety of cakes available here, but the best sellers are the Red Velvet and Granny's Cake. No main course meal is available here though (and certainly no whisky :P), similar to their main branch in Empire Shopping Gallery.

Whisk is famous for its many choices of cakes. First timers should try Red Velvet or Granny’s Cake. Carrot Pecan Cake (bottom).

Their famous coffee is the Cold Brew Coffee, which uses 12 hours to brew and to be drank chilled. Alternatively, try their newly added coffee, the Mochaccino Con La Nutella, which is mocha served in a cup heavily coated with Nutella (Nutella's fans go crazy!). Just remember to check your teeth for sticky chocolate marks before walking out. :)

Verdict:

I salute Whisk Outpost for not only surviving thus far operating next to Starbucks, but being able to make it name for itself in Klang Valley. So if you are in 1 Utama and craving for a cuppa, whisk yourself here to try their coffee (try their Cold Brew Coffee and Mochaccino Con La Nutella) and cakes (best sellers are Red Velvet and Granny's Cake)!
